Calling it "A direct affront to the people of Connecticut," State Representative John Hetherington (R-125th, New Canaan-Wilton) condemned the action of the majority Democrats in the State Legislature who forced adjournment of both the House and Senate just minutes after convening on Tuesday, December 15.
The special session was called by Governor Rell to deal with a deficit approaching $500 million that has accumulated just since the current budget was adopted on August 31. In a prepared release, Hetherington said "The Governor offered a plan for deficit mitigation and the Republicans also offered a plan. We came to Hartford and were fully ready to do the people's business. But the Democrats apparently had no plan and even refused to debate those proposals on the table. It is unconscionable to do nothing while our situation worsens and the state's credit rating teeters on the edge."
Noting the Democratic leadership's expressed an intention to return to session before Christmas, or at least by the end of the year, Representative Hetherington questioned "What they will know then that they didn't know last Tuesday."
